Sound Design Snacks 51 – What Is Modal Synthesis

When you filter noise, and push the resonance/Q and/or gain you get an oscillation in the filter. With multiple filter peaks, this technique can be used to emulate the modal resonances of physical objects being struck, bowed, blown on, or otherwise interfered with. It can be a great deal of fun, and the results can be strikingly organic and useable.
