Dr PJ Thum - Speaking Truth to Power

In any healthy ‘democratic’ country, no one should lose his job for speaking truth to power but that’s what had happened to Dr. Thum Ping Tjin (PJ Thum). He lost his job in NUS after publishing and giving lectures on his research on Operation Coldstore, where over 100 activists were detained without trial in the 1963.

PJ Thum, a historian, is a rare breed in Singapore. He gave up an esteem position overseas and chose to return to Singapore because South East Asia is his home. Despite not being able to continue his teaching, he doesn’t yield to authority and even more fervent in his sharing of Singapore history and politics.

Go listen to his talks, podcasts and one can feel how much he loves Singapore. Idealistic, intelligent, eloquent but more importantly, a man with moral courage.
His repeated calls for a debate with the government have so far met with a deafening silence.
