Konus vs. Celestron 100mm Spotting Scopes

In this video I compare and contrast two 100mm spotting scopes: the Konus 20-60x100mm and the Celestron Ultima 22-67x100mm. Both spotting scopes are great values in the $300 range with excellent (and nearly equivalent) optical quality.

Specs: The Celestron weighs in at 4.34lb and 21.5" in length and 108mm at the objective, while the Konus weighs in a bit heavier at 4.95lb and 19" in length and 125mm at the front objective (due to the built-in sun shade). The Celestron is also a bit front-heavy when mounted.

Overall I believe build quality of the Konus to be superior and more user friendly, especially for new spotters. Keep in mind that optical clarity will vary with atmospheric conditions, and it is essential to have the best tripod you can afford to get the most out of your spotting scope. Even the best spotting scope will suffer if your tripod is unstable, and your tripod's stability will definitely be put to the limit with these heavy 100mm telescopes, especially if the wind kicks up!
