T-129 ATAK Multirole Attack helicopter

The T-129 is an attack and multirole combat helicopter currently under development for the Turkish Army. An enhanced version of the Agusta A129 Mangusta, the T-129's development is now the responsibility of Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), with AgustaWestland as the primary partner. The ATAK Helicopter Program started on July 2, 2008, with the aim of providing the Turkish Land Forces Command with Attack/Tactical Reconnaissance helicopters. Under the program, after being customized according to user needs, 50 firm and 41 optional Attack/Tactical Reconnaissance helicopters will be produced and delivered to the end-users starting from the third quarter of 2013. The helicopters will also be provided with integrated logistics support for their whole life cycle. T129 helicopter has the capability of high maneuver and flight stability, excellent performance for “high and hot” conditions, 3 hours endurance and long-range and all-weather day and night operations with the 5 bladed rotor system, wheeled landing gear, powerful advanced technology LHTEC-T800 engines, new generation advanced FLIR sighting system, integrated helmet-mounted display, effective, precise and distinctive weapon systems, digital cockpit architecture, mission computers, and advanced flight and fire control systems. High performance, excellent maneuvering capability, asymmetrical weapon loading, low visual, aural, and radar signature, high level of crashworthiness, and ballistic tolerance enables T129 helicopter multi-role, excellent operational capability in the most hostile of battlefield environments. TAI announce the successful first flight of the T129 prototype in August 2011. The first flight, conducted by TAI’s test pilots, of the T129 “P6” prototype helicopter has timely and successfully been completed at TAI’s facilities in Akinci (Ankara). In May 2013, TAI announced that the Turkish Army is on the way to take delivery of the first homemade T-129 ATAK Advanced Attack and Tactical Reconnaissance helicopter. Speaking at the IDEF exhibition in 2013, company representatives stated that the army is expected to take delivery of its first aircraft in the coming weeks.
T-129 is among the best attack gunships in the world but its export potential is limited as the deal of 30 helicopters for service in the Pakistan Army is stuck due to engine supplies. Pakistan chose Turkey’s T192 attack helicopters to replace its fleet of AH1F Cobra gunships that were acquired in the 1980s. Its engine is a joint venture between the American firm Honeywell and the British company Rolls-Royce. Currently, Pakistan is giving extensions to Turkey for deals. The solution is in the form of Turkish indigenous components and engines.
