Prescription drugs are downplayed by public education while heroin is demonized, is there really that much of a difference in dangers? Heroin, Oxycontin, Vicodin, Morphine, Codeine, Opium, etc. all belong to the opiate drug class. They're all derived from opium. What makes these opiates different as far as effects and dangers?

Prescribed drugs aren't less dangerous than heroin, there's just less education about the dangers involved. They can be just as physically addictive as the heroin drug, they also have acetaminophen which is liver toxic. As a former heroin addict who used prescription drugs recreationally I can say they're extremely similar, especially at high doses. This is why oxy's referred to as "synthetic heroin" or the "doctors heroin". However, this can be said about all prescribed opiates.

The heroin problem isn't caused by the doctors. The drug problem in America stems from lack of education. This leads to not only addiction but abusing substances to the point of irreversible damage. Every drug can be a deadly drug, from Tylenol to heroin.
