Aberystwyth Walk: Town Centre & Beach【4K】
Located on the west coast of Wales, in the county of Ceredigion, is the town of Aberystwyth.
The town was built around Aberystwyth Castle, which was constructed between 1277 and 1289 under the reign of Edward I during the First Welsh War. The castle would later be destroyed under orders of Oliver Cromwell in 1649, having been a Royalist stronghold during the English Civil War. This accounts for its current state of ruin observed in the video.
Industry in Aberystwyth historically comprised of silver and lead mining, shipbuilding and fishing. In 1864 Aberystwyth Railway Station opened, leading to a boom in tourism. Eight years later, in 1872, Aberystwyth University opened, originally under the name University College Wales. The building in which it was founded was originally intended as a grand neo-Gothic hotel, but ended up being sold cheaply to the Welsh National University Committee following bankruptcy. This is the building featured between the 13 and 16 minute mark in the video.
Fun fact: despite being on the west coast of Wales, Aberystwyth has a Shrewsbury postcode prefix (SY). Speaking of which, if you want to get to any major coastal town or city in Wales via rail from Aberystwyth, you'll have to go all the way over the border to Shrewsbury first! In which case you're much better off taking a TrawsCymru bus, not least for the breathtaking views of Snowdonia if you're headed north.
