Reevaluating Marijuana? What A Shift in Federal Policy Means

Back in October of 2022, President Biden made a significant announcement on Twitter.

He acknowledged that the war on drugs has disproportionately impacted Black and Brown communities and stated that the scheduling of marijuana needed to be reevaluated by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Currently, marijuana is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, the most restrictive category.

This classification means that marijuana is considered to have no known medical benefit and is highly addictive.

President Biden admitted that this classification is ridiculous.

Fast forward about a year to August of 2023, and the Department of Health and Human Services recommended to the DEA that marijuana be rescheduled from Schedule 1 to Schedule 3.

This change would recognize marijuana's medical benefits and reduce the restrictions associated with its use.

The reclassification would mark a significant shift in drug policy and reflect growing recognition of marijuana’s potential medical benefits.

It’s a step towards addressing the disproportionate impact of drug policies on marginalized communities and aligning federal regulations with evolving public and scientific understanding.
