Turning toxic waste into green steel

In industries crucial for daily life, such as mobility, construction, and medicine, #steel and #aluminium play pivotal roles. However, their production has significant #environmental implications. The steel industry alone contributes to ~8% of global CO2 emissions, while aluminium production generates yearly about 180 million tons of toxic waste known as red #mud , accumulating in waste pounds or open fields worldwide. Addressing these challenges, researchers at @mpieisen developed a comprehensive solution. By extracting iron from red mud and producing CO2-free steel, they not only tackle environmental issues but also contribute to sustainable practices in the metallurgy industry.
