In this bone marrow transplant animation, we explain what the procedure is, what it can treat, and the various steps involved. Bone marrow transplant kya hota hai? Watch and find out!
Bone marrow transplant is a non-surgical procedure that infuses healthy cells into the body. It is used to treat bone marrow cancer, lymph node cancer, leukaemia, multiple myeloma, and blood disorders like aplastic anaemia and sickle cell anaemia.
In the procedure, healthy stem cells taken from the bone marrow, blood, or umbilical cord are used to replace cancerous or faulty blood cells. The stem cell transplant can be of three types–autologous (self-donated stem cells), allogeneic (matched/half-matched stem cells from a donor), or syngeneic (only possible for identical twins).
If this procedure is performed with half-matched stem cells, it is called haploidentical bone marrow transplant.Careful preparation is required for successful results, which includea conditioning for patients with cancer. It might take up to several weeks for healthy, cancer-free cells to grow after the bone marrow transplant procedure.
Are there any precautions to be followed before and after the transplant? Watch our explanation in the video and dispel your fears.
