GOODNITE, SWEETHEART, GOODNITE - SPANIELS (1953) on Vee-Jay 78RPM (Doo Wop, original version)

First recorded in September, 1953, by R&B doo-wop group, The Spaniels, Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite was written in 1951 by the group’s lead singer Thornton James 'Pookie' Hudson and Vee-Jay Records executive Calvin Carter.

After its release in December, 1953, the song gained chart popularity and jukebox plays, becoming one of the top songs of 1954.

The McGuire Sisters released their rendition of the song in 1954 earning more success than the original Spaniels' release and becoming, at the time, the best-selling version of the song.

In 1973, The Spaniels' original version regained popularity when it was featured in the motion picture American Graffiti, a movie set in 1962. It was also included in the soundtrack release, '41 Original Hits from the Soundtrack of American Graffiti' on MCA Records. Coordinating and securing copyright releases for the multitude of era songs used in the film was no small feat, with Elvis Presley being a glaring absence in the collection of songs due to the inability to obtain clearance.

Many artists covered the song over the years, often modifying the title to 'Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight' or 'Goodnight, Its Time To Go' . Notable cover artists include Chuck Berry, Sha Na Na, and Johnnie & Jack.
