Who were the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes? The world of Jesus was rife with factions, revolutionaries, and religious groups, each with their own idea of what it would look like for the kingdom of God to come:

0:32 - The Pharisees tried to live in a state of holiness and purity, and believed that Israel—the people of God—were special.
1:08 - The Sadducees were comprised of the aristocracy, and were largely based in Jerusalem; from their ranks came the chief priests.
1:21 - The Essenes retreated to the desert, where in addition to transcribing the writings now known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, they prayed and waited for God to act—ready to join him when he did.
