Bali is incredibly safe... perhaps one of the safest places on Earth for travellers, whether accompanied or alone. But safety only stretches so far when it comes to opportunistic thieves, snatch and grab incidents, fellow broke-ass travellers and the seemingly knowledgable ex-pat. Certain dark dodgy lanes, pick-pockets, muggings and worse sporadically occur in the tourist clusters of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak but are mostly non-existent in other areas.
