The Boswell Sisters - When it`s sleepy time down south (1932).wmv
When It's Sleepy Time Down South (1932) Fleischer Studios, animated short premiered November 11, 1932; title song arranged, recorded for the film; no other tunes, The Boswell Sisters, Eddie Lang guitar.
Despite that some of words in this lyrics are absolutely not done. I think the sisters were in good faith, but I think it's a bit a shame that they were naive in reproducing this lyrics. This song was written in 1930’s and in the 1940’s justly the discussion about this lyrics became a hot item. The song was used and popularised by Louis Armstrong as his opening song by his performances. And guess what, he lost many black fans because of using this lyrics. At last he changed this lyrics by:
Pale moon shining on the fields below
Folks are crooning songs soft and low
Needn't tell me so because I know
It's sleepy time down south
Soft winds blowing through the pinewood trees
Folks down there like a life of ease
When old mammy falls upon her knees
It's sleepy time down south
Steamboats on the river a coming or a going
Splashing the night away
Hear those banjos ringing, the people are singing
They dance till the break of day, hey
Dear old southland with his dreamy songs
Takes me back there where I belong
How I'd love to be in my mammy's arms
When it's sleepy time way down south
Dear old southland with his dreamy songs
Take me back there where I belong
How I'd love to be in my mammy's arms
When it's sleepy time down south
Sleepy time down south
About the Boswell sisters: they were children of a middle class family from New Orleans Louisiana. As mostly usual at that time the families personnel were black people. The sisters learned singing and developping a special feeling for rhythm thanks to their black nanny’s (that’s a reason that you can’t say that their sound is typically white). The family has a very good relationship with their personnel and vice versa. Unfortunately, racism seems to be an irreversible problem in mankind, I deeply regret that. I hope that mankind someday heals from this morbid trait. Kind regards, Aad
