Panel Discussion on Harvard Tamil Chair

This panel at Swadeshi Indology Conference 3 (at IIT Madras) discusses Harvard's program to set up a Tamil Chair. The topic of the panel is not about the merits of Tamil. In fact, all the panelists agree that Tamil is a great language which needs to be better appreciated and propagated. The issue of debate is entirely different: whether the Harvard Chair being set up must be explicitly under the control of people in Tamil Nadu, such that it does not spin out of control and turn into yet another political weapon of Harvard for intervention in India's affairs. At times, some panelists lose sight of the focus of the panel, and confuse between praise for Tamil and blanket support for the Harvard Chair. Specific ideas are presented on how to better manage the representation of Tamil language and culture worldwide, and the importance of keeping Dravidianism out of Tamil studies.
