How to Do a Basic Squat1.

Set Your StanceStand tall with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, and your toes pointed slightly outward.

2. Extend Your ArmsExtend your arms straight out in front of you parallel to the floor for balance.

3. Hinge and DescendEngage your abdominal muscles. Begin the movement by pushing your hips back (like you are sitting down into an invisible chair) and bending your knees. Keep your chest up and back flat, avoiding any rounding of the spine.

4. Watch Your KneesEnsure your knees are tracking directly in line with your toes. Do not let your knees collapse inward. Your weight should remain primarily on your heels and mid-foot.

5. Hit the Bottom and Push UpLower yourself until your thighs are parallel to the floor, or as low as is comfortable for your mobility.

Pause briefly, then push firmly through your heels to drive yourself back up to the starting position, squeezing your glutes at the top
