How to clean your mechanical keyboard

Cleaning your mechanical keyboard is an important part of maintenance to ensure it works properly and looks good. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to clean your mechanical keyboard:

What You’ll Need:
Keycap puller (a plastic or metal tool to remove keycaps)
Microfiber cloth or soft, lint-free cloth
Cotton swabs
Isopropyl alcohol (preferably 70% or higher)
Compressed air can (optional)
Brush (small, soft-bristled brush like a paintbrush)
Dish soap and water (for cleaning keycaps)
Plastic container (for soaking keycaps)
Step 1: Unplug Your Keyboard
Always disconnect your keyboard from your computer to avoid accidental key presses and to prevent damage.

Step 2: Remove the Keycaps
Using a keycap puller, gently pull off the keycaps. Start with the larger ones (like the space bar or shift keys), then move to the smaller ones. Be careful not to damage the switches underneath. If you're unsure, check the user manual of your keyboard for instructions on removing the keycaps safely.

Step 3: Clean the Keycaps
Soak the Keycaps: Place the keycaps in a bowl with warm water and a bit of dish soap. Let them soak for about 30 minutes to loosen dirt, oil, and grime.
Scrub: After soaking, use a soft brush or cloth to gently scrub the keycaps. Be careful not to scratch them.
Rinse and Dry: Rinse the keycaps with clean water and dry them thoroughly with a towel. Allow them to air dry completely before reattaching them to the keyboard.
Step 4: Clean the Keyboard Surface
Use a Microfiber Cloth: Dampen a microfiber cloth with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol or water. Wipe down the keyboard surface to remove dust, oils, and debris. Avoid getting liquid inside the switches.
Brush Debris: Use a small brush (like a paintbrush) to gently brush away any dirt or crumbs between the keys.
Compressed Air: If you have a can of compressed air, use it to blow out any dust or debris from the keyboard, especially between the key switches.
Step 5: Clean Around the Switches
For deeper cleaning, especially if there’s grime around the switches:

Cotton Swabs: Dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol and carefully clean around the switch stems.
Brush or Air: After using the swab, use a brush or compressed air to remove any leftover cleaning residue.
Step 6: Reattach the Keycaps
Once the keycaps and keyboard surface are clean and dry, carefully place the keycaps back on the switches. Press down firmly on each keycap to ensure it’s secured properly.

Step 7: Test Your Keyboard
After reassembling your keyboard, plug it back in and test all the keys to ensure they’re working properly.

Additional Tips:
Regular Maintenance: Clean your keyboard every few months to prevent dirt buildup.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Don't use strong cleaners or abrasive materials, as they could damage the keycaps or the keyboard surface.
Keep It Covered: If you’re not using your keyboard for an extended period, consider using a dust cover to keep it clean.
