Doug Ford provides update on stay-at-home order in Ontario | LIVE

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to announce a provincewide stay-at-home order starting Thursday, and will provide an update on the latest health restrictions intended to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

The closure of non-essential retail businesses is being considered, with a limit to curbside pickup only. Big-box stores, meanwhile, would be restricted to essential aisles only, a shift in policy from past lockdowns when the stores were allowed to sell non-essential items, much to the frustration of many small businesses.

Schools are expected to remain open for in-person learning, other than in areas such as Toronto and Peel, where local medical officers of health have ordered their closures.

On Tuesday, Ford clarified which groups would be eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in Phase 2, including some essential workers but eligibility for teachers will not be until at least mid-May.

The premier said that high-risk essential workers that have priority include those who work in the manufacturing sector and meat-packing industries where outbreaks have often occurred. The clarification comes amid a push by unions and Ontario opposition leaders to offer vaccines to education workers.
