How I Mix My Bonsai Soil, February 2026

Before you attempt to mix your own bonsai soil make sure you are wearing a good quality face mask, as well as eye protection. Breathing in the particles from the soil is not good for you and if you get the soil dust in your eye it can cause an eye infection.

I forgot to mention in the video, but my soil mix is very inspired by the soil mix used by Nigel Saunders of The Bonsai Zone. Go check out his channel for some incredibly inspiring videos. He is an amazing artist and is a huge inspiration in my bonsai journey.

In this video the bonsai soil mix I put together is 40% perlite, 40% calcined clay, and 20% orchid bark. I go over all the various tools I use to sift out the best possible bits of soil. One thing to note is that when you begin using free draining bonsai soil like this, depending on the tree, you will need to begin watering your tree once or even sometimes twice a day. The reason why is that the soil dries much faster than your average garden soil. It is a commitment to water that often, but your trees will be quite happy once you switch to this type of soil.
