Detainee crimes ‘so serious no other country would take them'
Shadow Home Affairs Minister James Paterson says the 80 detainees released back into Australian society are only in the country because the crimes they committed are so serious “no other country would take them”.
The High Court ruled indefinite detention illegal on November 8 meaning over 80 detainees, including child sex offenders, were released back into society.
“Indefinite detention is not the solution that any government prefers or proposes,” Mr Paterson told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
“In fact, these people were detained pending their removal in the hope that we would find a third country that would accept them.
“They should not be in Australia, the only reason they are in Australia is because the crimes they committed are so serious that no country wanted to take them.”
