Englischer Garten, Munich: Surfing, Theatre and Brass Bands | Documentary

The Englischer Garten is one of the largest inner city parks in the world – and one of the most beautiful. As the first national park in Europe, it was laid out over 300 years ago according to the English natural landscape garden ideal – hence the name.

Our cinematic journey begins in spring – with the surfers at the Eisbach river. A standing wave in the brook attracts surfers from all over the world. We ride the wave with surfer Ben Müller who shows us his daredevil tricks.

In summer, we continue our stroll to the north of the Englischer Garten. Here life is quieter. Shepherdess Eva Mittermaier and her family spend their days looking after their flock of 300 sheep. The animals function as natural lawn mowers in the park. Eva and her family devote themselves to caring for them – with great passion and typical Bavarian easiness.

Meadows, groves, artificial lakes and winding paths: the centuries-old layout of the English landscape garden still makes city dwellers happy. The Englischer Garten in Munich and other large city parks are the consequence of our longing to be close to nature – and thus perhaps to a world in which everything seems just a little bit easier.
