How to make a Motanka doll

Motanka - traditional Ukrainian amulet doll. The name “Motanka” comes from the verb that means “to reel up”. Elements of the dolls are wound on the base and fastened with a long thread. Natural materials and a good mood of the master during work are the most important conditions in making a doll.

These amulet dolls have a lot of secrets. Almost every detail has its sacrad meaning. Motanka has no face, instead, there is a cruciform pattern (symbol of the sun) that seals the energies of good and light. The vertical line embodies the presence of masculine energy, while the horizontal line represents feminine energy. Both of these energies are important for a person to maximize his (her) potential.
