Kenai River Fishing and Camping Trip Turned, Life-or-Death Search and Swift Water Rescue.
Our 4th of July weekend of fishing, rafting, and camping trip in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge; quickly turned into a life or death search and rescue mission when an inexperienced couple on a lake kayak floated into the Kenai River Canyon on 7/2/2022.
Having glacier water and with class III, IV white water. The two capsized the small boat on the first wave entering the canyon. Floating down river, they hung to the boat for safety. Yelling at people that were fishing, that they badly needed help.
As we floated into the refuge, we were flagged down and told that the boaters needed help. Knowing what danger they were in, we made the call to stop fishing and track down the capsized couple. As the hikers took off for cell phone service. We continued to float down the very cold river. Finding them stuck freezing on a small cliff face, with no dry clothes, lost most of their camping gear, and no place Cody can stop our boat. We convince the couple to try and get back in the small kayak and meet us around a corner where we can all stop and asses the situation.
Waiting for the couple around the corner, we watch the boat get thrown with the first wave, and both get put back into the raging current. Racing back to our raft, we begin to chase the pair down. Catching up with them minutes later, we wrestle the two into the boat.
Making the decision that out best bet is to get the couple down to the mouth of the river. As we make the hour long boat ride to Skilak lake, we see 3 State Trooper airplanes searching the area. And when we reach the lake, a Trooper in a boat finds us and takes the couple back to Skilak Lake Campground where they can be picked up by a vehicle. Glad those hikers followed through and made the call.
When the trooper talked to us on Skilak lake. He said that they thought they were going to be finding bodies.
