Disney World: Kite Tales featuring The Lion King (4K)
In 1998 the Animal Kingdom Park opened for the first time. Featuring live animals the traditional fireworks shows were not an option. As a result the park closed at sunset for nearly 2 decades before a new kind of night time production was introduced. Originally announced in 2013 and with construction starting in 2014 a new Discovery River Theater was built to accommodate the Rivers of Light nighttime show in 2016. The start wasn't smooth though with a delay of nearly a full year to February of 2017 before it would finally premiere and then poor guest satisfaction and costs would lead to repeated changed of the format. Ultimately it would close with the onset of the Covid Pandemic and not return. Unlike the other parks that would see delayed returns of the night time entertainment, Animal Kingdom's would not return. Instead a new production known as Kite Tales was announced as a daytime show to utilize the venue as a part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration.
The show was created in one of the shortest times for a new production thanks to its heavy utilization of existing properties. It utilized the theater from River of Lights, the jet skis with light up kites from Epcot Forever, and even the existing Discovery Island Drummers flotilla to kick off the show. The main new investment involved the giant kites that are utilized during the show.
The new Kite Tales show takes place several times each day alternating between a Lion King version and a Jungle Book version. The primary difference between the two is the music and giant kites flown during the main portion of the show. The choreography is similar in each making it more a pair of overlays that entirely unique shows.
