This question comes up a lot in the Discord chat and in the comments, so I wanted to weigh in my 2 cents on it. Different studios have different rules and different art directors have their own rules for what they look for in an artist when hiring them. I've asked this question a lot throughout my 25 year career, and I could probably do a 4 hour talk about just this one topic. Of course I've got a pretty open mind about it, but these are my observations over the years and the conclusions that I've come to.

Things I've worked on:
Overwatch (PC, PS4)
League of Legends (PC)
Diablo 3 (PC,PS4)
Hearthstone (Mobile, PC)
Burning Crusade (PC)
Wrath of the Lich King (PC)
Indivisible
Unsung Story
Final Fight Streetwise (PS2)
He Man (GBA)
Terminator 3 (GBA)
CannonBallers (Mobile)
CreeD
Twilight Monk
Ikeda
Nova Colony
Galaxy's Edge
SodaPopSoldier
Millenium Actress
Goblins and Gnomes
