Ramaphosa and Julius Malema in Serious Trouble as UK Sends Warning Following Shocking ANC-EFF Move

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema are facing what could be the most significant political and diplomatic storm of their careers following a sudden, high-stakes coalition agreement between the African National Congress (ANC) and the EFF. In the wake of the surprising political maneuver, the United Kingdom has issued a stark diplomatic warning — signaling what could be the start of a broader international fallout.

The ANC, weakened after failing to secure an outright majority in the recent general elections, announced on Monday that it would be forming a formal coalition government with the EFF — a move that many observers say signals a dramatic leftward shift in South Africa’s political landscape.

The announcement has triggered widespread political upheaval domestically — but perhaps more alarmingly for the ruling party, it has drawn swift and pointed criticism from abroad.

In an unusual and strongly-worded statement, the British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) declared that the United Kingdom was “deeply concerned” by the ANC’s decision to enter into a governing partnership with the EFF — a party long known for its anti-Western rhetoric, radical economic policies, and confrontational posture toward foreign investors.

The United Kingdom values its historic partnership with South Africa, but we are gravely concerned by recent political developments,” the statement read. “The EFF’s open hostility toward market-based economic policy, its threats to constitutional protections such as property rights, and its divisive rhetoric are matters of serious concern. We urge the South African government to reaffirm its commitment to constitutional democracy, the rule of law, and inclusive economic growth.
Diplomatic sources in London, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the UK has begun reviewing various bilateral agreements, including trade and investment frameworks, defense cooperation initiatives, and development aid programs.

The tone of the statement suggests that punitive measures — including the imposition of targeted sanctions or the suspension of trade preferences — are not off the table should the new coalition pursue controversial policies such as land expropriation without compensation, nationalization of mines and banks, or intimidation of political opponents.
The political implications at home are equally dramatic. The ANC-EFF alliance is being seen by many as a desperate attempt by the ANC to retain executive power after slipping below the 50% mark for the first time in South Africa’s democratic history.

Insiders say the deal was finalized behind closed doors over the weekend, with senior ANC officials reportedly split down the middle on whether to proceed. Several senior figures — including party veterans and provincial leaders — are said to have warned Ramaphosa that aligning with Malema’s populist, hard-left movement could destroy what remains of the ANC’s centrist credibility.
