Garter snake eats frog (1 of 2)
This scene is something I happened upon while hiking. I have hiked several thousand miles, but this is the only time I've seen something like this. So, I felt it was worth documenting. I felt sorry for the frog also; however, I took the path of non-interference. What this documents was already happening. If I hadn't been there it would have happened anyway. For those who commented that I should have saved the frog:
1) This is nature. Nature is brutal. Millions of snakes have eaten cute little frogs for tens of millions of years. If you think the snakes and the frogs should exist in harmony, it doesn't work that way. It's called the food chain.
2) Much of what is wrong with the world today is that people think they should improve and interfere with nature.
3) The snake has to eat, too. What is your approved list of snake foods that don't involve some cute critter being killed? Who are you to make that decision?
4) A frog of that size has killed hundreds or thousands of insects. What about the poor insects that suffered?
5) Assuming that saving the poor frog was the "right" thing to do, exactly how do you propose that I should have done that? Are you aware that snakes have inverted teeth that only allow their food to move down their throats? If I could have magically killed the snake without harming the frog further, the frog still wouldn't come out of the snake's mouth easily without harming the frog, due to these teeth. Pulling the frog out would probably have ripped its skin off, and it no doubt would have died anyway from the trauma.
