The Beriev A-50 (NATO reporting name: Mainstay) is a Soviet airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft based on the Ilyushin Il-76 transport. Developed to replace the Tupolev Tu-126 "Moss", the A-50 first flew in 1978. Its existence was revealed to the Western Bloc in 1980 by Adolf Tolkachev.

Introduced into service in 1984, the AWACS aircraft, the A-50 received the NATO code designation "Mainstay". This machine was created on the basis of the Il-76 transport aircraft, the operation of which began in the mid-1970s, and was intended to replace the Tu-126 "Moss" AWACS aircraft. The cockpit was equipped with workspaces for 10 operators (a total of 15 people in the crew) of the Shmel radio-technical complex, the radar antenna of which was placed in a fairing above the fuselage. In addition, the tail turret was removed from the aircraft, instead of which they placed the antennas of the electronic intelligence system, installed satellite communication and navigation systems, improved state recognition equipment and an electronic warfare system. Only two transparent panels on the sides remained from the glazed nose of the transport aircraft, and an elongated radome for satellite systems antennas was placed on top of the fuselage, in front of the center section. A large air intake for the electronic equipment cooling system appeared at the base of the keel, and a refueling system bar was installed in the bow.
The production rate of the aircraft (five machines per year) dropped sharply in 1990 due to the economic problems faced by the USSR. Weight restrictions prevented the A-50 from taking off with a full supply of fuel, and aerial refueling was difficult due to vehicle aerodynamic problems, which reduced patrol times. In addition, the efficiency of the crew fell due to the lack of places for proper rest.
The aircraft was modernized, equipping it with Shmel-B radar and new on-board equipment. These machines received the designation A-50U and A-50M, although it is still not officially clear how correct these names are. In 1991, two A-50s patrolled over the Black Sea, tracking the actions of anti-Iraqi coalition aircraft during Operation Desert Storm. These aircraft were also used during the Chechen campaign. The improved A-50EI delivered to India was equipped with the Israeli Phalcon phased array radar. An attempt to supply a similar aircraft to China failed due to strong protests from the US government, and the Chinese began to develop their own AESA radar based on the radar for the fleet, created in the 1990s. A Chinese AWACS aircraft known as the KJ-2000 took to the air in 2003. According to the Chinese, the radar installed on the KJ-2000 is superior in performance to the Phalcon station. If this is true, then China really received a much more advanced AWACS aircraft.
