No Effort November - PDXLAN Kom-Pew-Pew-Pew-Tor
A little about this build:
It is a Athlon II X4 640 w/ 16GB of RAM running Windows 10 from a SSD (yeah, I cheated, see below in the puns!)
The motherboard is actually very securely mounted. I put some small holes into the cardboard, attached standoffs, and then glued those standoffs in place.
For the PCIe cards, I used 1x extensions for each card, because extra jank! The cards each had their own custom mounting bracket built for them out of the spare cardboard left over after cutting out the holes for the fans.
The three PCIe cards are a Creative Labs sound card, an Emulex dual-10gbe NIC, and an ATI/AMD budget GPU of some old generation I don't even remember.
The USB 1.44MB floppy drive was never tested, as noted below in the puns ;)
All of the RGBs in the case used my own custom microcontrollers with my own animation code running on them. I public a lot of this type of code over on GitHub: https://github.com/orgs/circuitrewind/repositories
Sadly, the "case" got tossed a couple years back. The parts have been re-purposed and re-purposed again several times. Several of these components have been featured as "Jankinator" builds on this channel, and are also planned for future jankie shenanigans!
Oh... and I was too lazy to put white paper on all sides, so you only get to see the couple of sides where I actually did it :P
A listing of all the really bad puns in this video:
* *C-Board:* _Its literally cardboard_
* *Cases for Chris:* _He flies into PDXLAN. Very frequently, he has won a case at the event, which is absolutely painful to take back on an airplane! As such, we've created a fake "charity" called "Cases for Chris" that in case any of our group wins a case, we "donate" it to his cause (the struggle of getting it home)_
* *Mommy Board:* _Mother Board (quite obvious, I hope...?)_
* *Children Boards:* _Often called Daughter Boards or Add-In Cards_
* *Jaws or something:* _The RAM is "Ripjaws" branded_
* *A black box:* _This is a USB 1.44MB floppy drive, and only in the past couple months did I even try using it for the first time. Turns out the driver CD was stuck inside of it for YEARS!_
* *White Paint:* _Yes, its literally just printer paper_
* *Clear Coat:* _Well, you need something to protect your "paint", right..?_
* *Kom-Pew-Pew-Pew-Tor:* _I'm A Computer, but do the pew-pew-pew in games?_
* *R-G-Beez:* _Yes, these are Red/Green striped BEES (you're welcome Nicole)_
* *Don't Copy That Floppy!!* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up863eQKGUI
* *3D Mark The Minion:* _Yes, one of the Minion's Name's is Mark. Yes, the Minion's movies are 3D movies. And yes, there is a running joke that my favorite video game of all time is 3D Mark_
* _*hahahaa Fan Goes BBBBRRRRR*_
* *Its Overclocked:* _Yes, I was too cheap/lazy to get a REAL clock. Yes, I just printed out a clock face on some of that "White Paint" that I had laying around for this build._
* *B-Roll:* _Doesn't the honeycomb pattern on the PSU look totally awesome, especially with the lights inside !?_
* _The monitor being used has native DVI, but yes, I wanted to be extra, so I'm using DVI to VGA adapter._
* *Everybody runs faster with a knife:* _Shout Outs to FPS Doug! Additionally, after building the rig, I realized I didn't have place for the power button, so I can a pair of metal leads outside of the box, and use a knife to bridge the two leads to act as the "power" button_ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9qXbgrx9rg
* *VMware:* _You might have missed it, but before the Windows 98 Installation screen, I intentionally left in that I'm cheating and doing all the software inside of a VM on this box from modern windows. You can still see the white VMware bar at the top of the screen for the rest of the video_
* *Windows Activation:* _This host OS's Windows was not activated. Windows 98 doesn't even have activation, therefor never had an "Activate Windows" watermark._
* _Mouse Trails enabled, because heck yeah they are!_
* *FPS Better Graphics:* _Another FPS Doug reference! Also, old browsers don't have modern TLS cypher support, so most pages wont load, such as the PDXLAN site in the video. Hence, "dead"_
* _The gameplay videos were recorded on a deadline of only a few minutes to spare, I didn't have time to watch them before editing. I had to catch a train, and did the editing/publishing on the road. As such, I didn't know about the double audio issue until it was too late. I decided to just leave it in, because WALP, as if there hasn't already been enough jank!! :D_
