Free online talk by Prof Mayank Vahia
Dr. Mayank Vahia's early education was in Mumbai and he completed his master's degree in Physics from the University of Bombay in 1979 after getting his bachelor's degree from SIES College, Science Mumbai. He went on to do his PhD from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1979 and was involved in making telescopes for high-energy astrophysics. His PhD was based on an experiment on the SkyLab and he was actively involved in the making, flying and analyzing the data from the experiment on NASA's Space Shuttle - Space Lab facility. All his experiments provided significant insights into the dynamics of objects that emit X-rays and Gamma Rays. In 2000 he was appointed Director of the Nehru Planetarium in Mumbai.
After his return to TIFR he focused on the study of the history of astronomy and initiated the field of Archaeo Astronomy in India. The study included understanding evolution astronomy from early rock art, megaliths, ancient literature as well as astronomy of isolated tribes. This work has provided significant insights into the manner in which humans have looked at the sky over the millennia. He was also involved in the study of Harappan Civilization, its culture, astronomy and script.
He is also interested in the study of science, its growth and its impact on society at large. He initiated and headed Indian Astronomy and Junior Science Olympiad programmes and has also been active in the Earth Science Olympiad movement in India.
