Avoid My Dumb Rookie Tailoring Mistakes

Learning how to use a sewing machine and using it to tailor all of my clothes was probably one of the smartest things I've ever done. But I made a lot of mistakes a long the way, and I want to help you avoid making the same ones.

The first mistake that I made was making my clothes WAY too tight! There is a big difference between fitted and tight. Tight looks stupid, and is just as bad as baggy. I would tailor my dress shirts so tight that the front buttons would pull on themselves at my chest. And I made the mistake of tailoring my dress pants and chinos so that they rode up and got all bunched up when I sat down. It wasn't a good look...

The next mistake was not using the right tools! I used a seam measuring guide instead of fabric measuring tape, and I used old junk scissors instead of using dedicated fabric scissors. That alone would have saved me SO MANY headaches!

The last big mistake I made was not measuring properly and taking my time. I would fly through these projects and think that I had the measurements down only to find out that my shirt looked stupid. Tailoring is like carpentry, measure multiple times and cut once!
