William Ralston built San Francisco's Palace Hotel to be the largest in the world, funded by the limitless silver of the Comstock Lode, but his overextended empire collapsed just before it opened. Faced with financial ruin and public humiliation, he walked into the San Francisco Bay and drowned, leaving his masterpiece to be haunted by his ambition. This is the tragic story of the West's first grand hotel and the suicide that paid for it.
