Short Church: Names of Jesus | Week 1

This past Sunday we began a new sermon series for the season of Advent called "The Names of Jesus." We are focusing on Isaiah 9:2-7 for the series, a passage believed to be used in ancient times at the coronation of a new king of Israel. The early church later used this same passage as a witness to the ministry of Jesus. Handel’s Messiah also used this passage in praise of the baby king Jesus. Each week we will explore one of the names that describes the kingship of Jesus: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, and Prince of Peace. Yesterday we explored "Wonderful Counselor." It is interesting that Handel’s Messiah puts a coma between those two words. The holy scriptures do not. As a result, “wonderful” is a modifier for the noun “counselor.” That means this long-awaited king will have extraordinary wisdom.
