In this video you will learn how to draw a Jablonski diagram and you will be introduced to the key terms to understand them.

Specifically you will learn that first a photon is absorbed by a molecular system and an electron is excited both vibrationally and electronically. This electron, which remains in the singlet state, then relaxes vibrationally. There are three possibilities for what happens next. 1) The electron can radiatively relax, emitting a photon in a process called fluorescence. 2) The electron can relax non-radiatively and release its energy as heat. 3) The electron can undergo a spin flip and convert to a triplet state by inter-system crossing. If this third option occurs then the electron will subsequently relax vibrationally and eventually relax through the emission of a photon in a process called phosphorescence.

The Jablonski diagram helps explain why a) fluorescence is lower energy than the absorbed photon b) phosphorescence occurs at lower energy still and c) why phosphorescence is slower than fluorescence.
