020483 The death of Karen Carpenter, remembered by Casey Kasem

Remembering Karen Carpenter, who died on this day in 1983.

The Carpenters were my childhood go-to musical duo for their pure, feel-good music. Hers was a voice like no other. Her death was simply too tragic. So, I've paid homage to Karen here with this long video tribute, with Casey Kasem sharing eight snippets about her and brother Richard from their childhood up into stardom, and then his final words after her passing from 10:36 onwards.

*The main goal of this channel is to highlight the very first appearance to Billboard's American Top 40 of the biggest artists of the 70s and the 80s, as introduced by the incomparable Casey Kasem.

Casey Kasem's first show was back on the 4th of July, 1970, so you'll get to hear how his voice, the jingles, and the music changed over the two decades.

You'll hear the very first mention of such greats as Elton John, David Bowie. Prince and ABBA from the 70s, and Madonna, Whitney Houston, Bon Jovi and U2 from the 80s. But, since that number wouldn't have been too big, I've included some well-known artists but not necessarily superstars from these two decades. So, in all, over 120 'first appearance' artists will be introduced on this channel. In some cases, their first songs are unknowns, whereas others' virgin appearance ends up being their biggest hits! And, where possible, more information about each artist or their songs will be added to their "first mentions" as recorded from subsequent airings of AT40.

There will also be a host of some 100+ "extras", with Casey taking us down memory lane as he tells us the story behind some unforgettable songs like "We Are The World" and "Sukiyaki"; for those artists who were already in the charts by the time Casey started AT40, he'll highlight one or two of their major accomplishments and/or tell us the stories of how they came to be - naturally, Elvis and the Beatles will be among them; we'll also bow our heads to those who we lost as Casey pays tribute to those who passed away during that era, such as to John Lennon and Buddy Holly.

I hope you enjoy looking back on AT40 a la Casey Kasem!
