Sports PPE Module - Section 3 | Station 2: Heart, Lungs, Abdomen, Skin, & Pulses Exam
🏆 Welcome back to the Sports Pre-Participation Exam (PPE) Training Series! In this video, Prof. Christina G. Gonzales, MPAS, PA-C (Professor G) and Prof. Angelica Urbina, MPAS, PA-C walk you through Station 2 of the Sports PPE Exam: Heart, Lungs, Abdomen, Skin, and Pulses Exam—a crucial part of screening for underlying cardiovascular, respiratory, and systemic conditions that could impact an athlete’s ability to participate safely in sports.
🩺 Why Is This Exam Station Important?
Many life-threatening conditions—such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), arrhythmias, asthma, or vascular abnormalities—may go undetected without a thorough physical exam. This station helps screen for red flags that may require further evaluation before clearance for athletic participation.
👟 What You’ll Learn in This Video:
• Cardiac Exam
o Listening for murmurs that suggest HCM or valvular disease
o Recognizing red flags like exertional syncope, family history of sudden cardiac death
• Pulmonary Exam
o Detecting wheezing, diminished breath sounds, or abnormal lung findings
o Identifying exercise-induced bronchospasm in athletes
• Abdominal Exam
o Palpation techniques for organomegaly (splenic enlargement, liver abnormalities)
o Identifying conditions that might restrict participation
• Skin Exam
o Screening for infectious conditions (MRSA, herpes gladiatorum, tinea infections) that require clearance before play
• Pulses Exam
o Checking for radial-femoral pulse delay (suggestive of coarctation of the aorta)
o Bilateral BP measurements for vascular screening
🏥 Common Red Flags That May Require Further Testing
This section of the PPE is essential to identify hidden cardiac and respiratory risks, ensuring athletes are safe to compete and that no serious underlying conditions are missed.
🎥 This is Part 5 of a 10-Video Series!
Stay tuned for weekly uploads covering each aspect of the sports pre-participation exam, giving you the confidence and knowledge to perform thorough and efficient PPEs!
