Raptor Engine Explained

What is SpaceX's raptor engine? What fuel does it use? What is a full-flow staged combustion cycle?

In this video, we discuss the Velociraptor engine, or raptor engine for short. We begin the video by talking about SpaceX's goals, and some of their incentives to the overall design of the rocket engine. As SpaceX aims to make spaceflight as frequent as air flight, the engines will need to perform hundreds to thousands of times to remain efficient. Therefore, the raptor engine is being designed to help lengthen the lifespan, and survive fatigue.

Then we discuss the idea of a full-flow staged combustion cycle. By using two turbines, a fuel-rich and oxygen-rich turbine, the engine is able to run at a lower pressure and temperature, helping alleviate some of repeated forces on the design. We then discuss the fuel for the rocket, methane and liquid oxygen, or oxidizer. The choice of Methane relates to SpaceX's main goal to make humanity multiplanetary.
