Sam Elliott! Tom Selleck! Jeff Osterhage! are THE SACKETTS!

Louis L'Amour's THE SACKETTS (1979) was a great looking, hard riding, western miniseries that was old fashioned (in the very best ways) and featured a truly amazing all-star cast. Veterans Glenn Ford, Ben Johnson, Jack Elam, Buck Taylor, Gilbert Roland, Pat Buttram, Slim Pickens, L.Q. Jones and many others were joined by three new actors in the leading roles. Sam Elliott, Tom Selleck and Jeff Osterhage starred as the Sackett brothers. Years before LONESOME DOVE, this 2-part network western had a more realistic look than what viewers were used to seeing on television. What's the story behind this beloved two-part classic, written by award winning western scribe, Jim Byrnes? A WORD ON WESTERNS guest, actor Jeff Osterhage recalls getting the role and a surprising last minute casting change that created a new star. Jeff discusses the style of little known western director Robert Totten, how he shaped the film and compares him with Andrew V. McLaglen, the director of the quasi sequel, THE SHADOW RIDERS. This reedited episode, originally aired as three short A WORD ON WESTERNS segments, shot in April, 2017.
