MAYSON - 1975 - Dreams & Slippery When It's Wet - Rare POMP
"Dreams" and "Slippery When It's Wet" by MAYSON, circa 1975, featuring future "STATES" members Jimmy McDonnell on vocals & keyboards and Morgan Hampton on drums & vocals, along with Jim Galyon on guitar & saxophone, Sam Harrell on bass, and Robert "Robeone" Schindler on keyboards.
Definitive information about MAYSON is scant and difficult to come by. They were from West Virginia, and evolved out of the earlier MASON who released the album "Harbour" in 1971. This first incarnation of MASON was a progressive rock trio comprised of Morgan Hampton on drums & vocals, Jim Galyon on guitar, bass, flute & vocals, and Steve Arcese on keyboards, vocals, and bass.
By 1973 Mason had morphed into the five piece MAYSON, who had the distinction of serving as supporting act for the Hollywood debut of the New York Dolls at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip. Though a stylistic mismatch with their glam headliners, MAYSON made a dramatic visual and sonic impact, and generated considerable local buzz at the packed-house Whisky shows; their British-flavored melodic progressive rock was enhanced by the presence of a Mellotron at front & center stage, played by lead vocalist James "Mick" McDonnell as he was then known, who wore a striking red plaid Scottish tartan tam.
Subsequently, for the following year or more, MAYSON appear to have been based in Southern California, playing dates in and around Los Angeles and the Inland Empire cities of Claremont/Pomona, and San Bernardino/Redlands. Toward the latter part of this period they are rumored to have changed their name temporarily to White Noise Pink Noise.
These two songs are from a cassette demo tape recorded circa 1975-6. After the dissolution of MAYSON, vocalist "Mick" McDonnell began using the first name of Jimmy and formed his own band called McDONNELL, which eventually became THE STATES who released three albums: "The States"/1979, "Picture Me With You"/1981, and "Now and Then"/1992.
For their second album "Picture Me With You", The States were joined by former MAYSON drummer/vocalist Morgan Hampton.
