Should I spay or neuter my pet? Debunking myths & embracing benefits
Pet owners often seek our guidance when considering whether to spay or neuter their pets. Thanks to recent research, we have a better understanding of the procedure's benefits and potential health concerns it can lead to down the road.
In this video, Tier 1 Veterinary Medical Center CEO, Dr. Sean McPeck, debunks some spay and neutering myths and discusses the pros and cons of each.

Dr. McPeck begins by highlighting recent research findings that caution against spaying/neutering dogs too early, especially larger breeds, as it can lead to orthopedic issues like ligament ruptures and hip dysplasia. Waiting until at least 15 months of age is recommended to prevent these problems.
Regarding females, he debunks the notion that spaying before the first heat cycle prevents mammary chain tumors. Instead, he emphasizes the benefits of allowing normal sex hormones to develop for a healthier life up to 15 months. Addressing concerns about unwanted pregnancies and pyometra, a serious uterine infection, he underscores the necessity of spaying female dogs.
For male dogs, Dr. McPeck discusses behavioral concerns related to intact males, such as guarding, aggression, wandering, and marking territory. He also explains how testosterone drives prostate issues and testicular cancer. The video stresses the balance between the benefits and risks of spaying/neutering, with each pet owner needing to make a tailored decision based on their lifestyle and pet's needs.
