Do You Need a Spiritual Director?
The question of whether one needs a spiritual director is a popular one. Fr. Mark-Mary and Mother Clare explain what spiritual direction is, who needs it, and who is ready for it.
Mother Clare never expected she would be a spiritual director, but she now fulfills that role for many who are seeking guidance. For someone who is newly getting into their faith, spiritual direction may not be the right choice. A person needs time to grow in their relationship with the Lord on their own before seeking guidance from someone else on how to do so.
The number of spiritual directors is limited. Those who are available can’t say yes to everyone.
Those who seek spiritual direction are usually seeking guidance, advice, formation, and possibly a confessor. These can be obtained from various alternative sources, including faith-filled friends, solid faith formation content, prayer, and a consistent priest who can hear your confession at least once a month.
Spiritual reading is a good alternative or supplement to a spiritual director as well. Reading is formative. Scripture, the writings of the saints, the Catechism, and the Lives of the Saints are all tools you can use to grow in holiness.
If someone is discerning something big like religious life, marriage, or another potentially life-changing decision, it may be wise for them to seek out a spiritual director. If you’re in this situation, ask God to direct you to the right spiritual director.
