STORYLINE:
Alison Dreith, an abortion activist in southern Illinois, spent Friday morning after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling going through the many texts, emails and tweets.
"My phone is blowing up," said Dreith, who works for the Midwest Action Coalition, which provides "practical support" for women seeking abortions – airfare, gas money, hotel rooms, child care.
After the ruling was issue Friday morning, she said her network of friends and colleagues was focusing on supporting one another. "Send cake. Provide jobs. Give hugs," she said. "The grief – because this IS grief – is going to come in waves."
She said she's particularly worried about abortion workers who live in states where abortion is likely to be outlawed. Already, she said, some support organizations in those states were "going dark" because they feared repercussions and for their safety.
Dreith, 41, said she fully expects that states with no legal abortion options will attempt to come after people like her who help their residents get abortions.
She lamented what she called "apathy" that led to this ruling but said she hoped people would get more involved in fighting back.
For now, Dreith said she feels lucky to live in Illinois, a state where Gov. J.B. Pritzker has continually vowed to keep abortion legal – and where a growing number of organizations in neighboring states continue to open abortion clinics.
"Today might be a huge setback, said Dreith. "But just again, like we saw after George Floyd and Breonna Taylor's murders, like we saw with the women's marches after Trump was elected, people are changing. People are taking action for the first time in their lives. And maybe you shouldn't have woken the bear."
She fears those intent on outlawing abortion won't stop there.
"Roe v Wade rested on the idea of privacy. And so while we're all dealing with the fallout today, others, specifically the LGBTQIA community, you know, are also on very high alert now, too, because their rights are almost equally tied to that."
