Beijing streets empty, testing queues long as more COVID restrictions imposed

Streets in Beijing were devoid of traffic and long queues for COVID-19 testing were seen on Thursday (May 12), as China's capital city tightened restrictions.

Late on Wednesday (May 11), authorities announced the suspension of taxis and ride-hailing services in parts of Chaoyang district, the epicenter of its COVID-19 outbreak, and two other districts.

Authorities there have also closed some malls, tourist and entertainment venues, banned dine-in services at restaurants, suspended sections of its bus and subway systems and imposed lockdowns on some residential buildings.

The capital, Beijing, reported 46 new COVID cases for Wednesday, up from 37.
