Lancashire Day Morris/Clog Dancers at the East Lancashire Railway 2017

It's that time of year again. Lancashire Day is celebrated on the 27th November each year. On this day in 1295 the first elected representatives from Lancashire were called to Westminster by King Edward I to attend what later became known as "The Model Parliament".

Curated by the Friends of Real Lancashire, it is observed with the loyal toast to "The Queen, Duke of Lancaster", and is celebrated from everywhere within the county palatine. The day is marked throughout the historic county by town criers announcing the Lancashire Day proclamation which declares the historic regions boundaries of the county, and finishes with "God bless Lancashire, and God save the Queen, Duke of Lancaster"

The East Lancashire Railway celebrated Lancashire Day by inviting groups of clog/morris dancers to the event along with some traditional folk singers.

In this video we see first the Britannia Coconut Dancers of Bacup. Their blackened faces are thought to be a pagan disguise against evil spirits or connected to coal mining. The Horwich Prize Medal Morris Men are seen next and are one of the longest running North West Morris sides in the country. Then we see the Littleborough Oakenhoof Cloggers with an eclectic mix of dancers. Lastly its the Southport Swords.
