How to measure Wheel Stud Circle Runout
Weber State University (WSU) - Automotive Technology Department - Transmission Lab. The on-car measurement procedure of wheel stud circle runout. Wheel stud circle runout and can cause first-order tire speed-related vibrations.
Timeline:
0:00 Introduction
2:08 Hub centered wheels
2:58 Dial indicator setup and mounting
3:48 Starrett 25R Contact Point Kit
4:23 The goal of the measurements
4:40 Finding the high spot of the first wheel stud
5:20 Zeroing the dial indicator on the first wheel stud
6:00 Rotating the axle/hub to the next wheel stud
6:30 Finding the high spot of the second wheel stud (0.003" (0.076mm) difference from the first wheel stud)
6:58 Finding the high spot of the third wheel stud (0.004" (0.1mm) difference from the first wheel stud)
7:58 Finding the high spot of the fourth wheel stud (0.0005" (0.013mm) difference from the first wheel stud)
8:20 always check the stud circle runout next to the flange
8:41 Finding the high spot of the fifth wheel stud (0.001" (0.025mm) difference from the first wheel stud)
8:56 Determining overall wheel stud runout of 0.004" (0.1mm)
9:30 The typical maximum specification for wheel stud runout is 0.010" (2.54mm)
9:52 Match mounting the wheel to the wheel studs
11:36 New parts do not equal good parts (in specification)
12:02 Summary
This video helps satisfy the requirements of the following NATEF Tasks:
3.E.E1.1 – Drive Axles - Inspect and replace drive axle wheel studs
3.E.E3.4 – Axle Shafts - Measure drive axle flange runout and shaft end play; determine necessary action - Priority Level 2
3.E.E3.5 – Axle Shafts - Diagnose noise and vibration concerns; determine necessary action - Priority Level 2
