Solo 131.17 Mile Cycle from London to Brighton & back to London

Cycling is one of the most addictive past time activities, people start out cycling for various reasons. For me it was to raise awareness & cash for Momentum a local children's charity that works with young cancer patients. The British Heart Foundation - London to Brighton 2013 was my introduction to cycling. I bought a cheap bike from a generic British retailer and within weeks I regretted not spending more for something better. I was hooked, next thing I was spending thousands of pounds on Bianchi and 60mm deep section mavic cosmic wheel set.

The memory of that bike ride was a fond one, it was over all too quickly with it feeling like I didn't break a sweat. Armed with a few years riding experience and better equipped I wanted to do the ride again. I mean it was only 56 miles, or is it?

I set off early with the Garmin quick to not it was only 54 miles, the first lie of the day and not it's last. I found myself making a few u-turns due to my Garmin malfunctioning despite it being brand new. I decided to follow the A23 it took me through some gorgeous countryside with epic climbs that had me out of the saddle. I had to ignore the Garmin and detour to Ditchling Beacon as it had bypassed it completely. 65 miles into my ride the climb up Ditchling Beacon was a lot easier than the last time I did it during lockdown. I stopped 3 times as I had only been cycling a few weeks up until that point. But this time round I got out the saddle once to up my pace a little and made it up all the way without stopping. A gentleman from Derbyshire went past me like I did when I cycled up Box Hill. With the cycle home firmly etched at the back of my mind I was pacing myself. 73.8 miles later I was cycling along the sea front in Brighton.

It was time to find a vegan restaurant with outside seating as I had my bike without a lock. My luck was in I found an amazing vegan pub/restaurant 100 Ditchling Road Brighton BN1 4SG. The staff were friendly, great service and even better food. The portions were huge, flavourful with loads of vibrant colours and an array of vegetables. Joining me for lunch was my good friend Ash and his wife Sarah accompanied by their cute son Isaac. Isaac is obsessed with buses, his eyes would light up every time one went by. He even tried to get on one if it weren't for Sarahs quick reflexes. Before long I was saying goodbye to my beautiful friends and cycling up Ditchling road back towards more hills and London.

The cycle home was extremely difficult as it was mostly uphill this time heading up the A22 towards Croydon. I wish I had a riding buddy to help motivate me on the steeper climbs. I took it slow and steady not really pushing myself as I would if I were in a group. Slow and steady got me home safely having completed my longest ride on strava. It was a very proud moment having completed that epic ride on my own.

I am capable of anything and will look to go further next time.
