Polish heavy infantryman (XIII century)

A brief overview of the 13th century Polish warfare starting from the development of heavy infantry, which albeit aligning itself substantially with the styles and techniques of the Frankish warfare, it still maintains local characteristics.

Polish warfare of the time was variegated, consisting of a solid bulk of noble ethnic cavalry in the wake of the Migration Age and Mongol influences and the maintenance of a solid stopping infantry which is also typical of Slavic warfare of the previous centuries.

Among other things we discuss the tarcznownicy, the particular rectangular shield designs in Polish warfare including pavise forms, the spread of crossbow over the most usual ethnic arc and the progressive privatization and artistocratization of Polish warfare despite the persistence of important nuclei of militiamen.
