The Makoko fish market is located on Herbert Macaulay Street Yaba and is one of the longest streets in the state which means it is always busy. The fish market opens every day but the best prices can be gotten very early in the morning on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Monday is rather dry and Saturdays are expensive because most caterers come to buy fish for weddings and parties. Knowing that fish is a high-profile meal at these events, fishmongers increase their price on Saturday.
The Makoko market is not by any means a standard high-profile fish market. The food safety standard-which mostly there isn’t any-is quite low. There are only regular cleaning of tables and sweeping of floors. There is neither rhyme nor rhythm, there is no particular structure in place but everybody knows their stall when the sun rises. Even getting the traders to wear aprons and gloves will be a huge task.
Most people who patronize the market just ignore the dirt and general condition of the environment and enjoy the beautiful creatures God put in the sea for them to eat, use as ornaments, or just for viewing pleasure.
The market is dominated by the Agoyin people from Cotonou. They are mostly fishermen wives and children and they live around Makoko. Some within walking distance of the market while others use the canoe to and fro from their homes daily.
