Dyeing Leather Hides

Sometimes it is easier to dye the whole leather hide than to dye individual small leather project pieces. Shelby, a leatherworker at Leathersmith Designs, describes how she dyes leather hides. The dyeing and finishing process she describes is only for undyed veg-tan leather. After bringing the undyed vegetable tanned leather to the workbench, she applies several coats of Fiebing's Pro Dye with a wool applicator on a wooden block. Pure neatsfoot oil is then applied to replenish oils in the leather. After allowing to dry overnight, a couple coats of Fiebing's Resolene is applied for a protective finish and for a nice sheen.
