The album is part of a series showcasing rarely heard or achop ragas by India’s legendary musicians. The ragas are not so common because they were traditionally not part of the major repertoire of a gharana. But they are rich in form and ethos. In this album, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi begins with Raga Bageshwari-Bahar, a rare and subtle blend of ragas Bageshwari and Bahar. That is followed by Raga Hindolita, which gets its strength and beauty from Ragas Hindol and Lalit. The album concludes with Raga Jaijaiwanti-Nat, emerging from the two ragas it is named after. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi’s skill lies in keeping the qualities of the individual ragas intact even as he gives the new raga a unique evocative power.
