Niger: The Land of Babies

Niger has the highest birth rate in the world, with the average woman having 6.75 children and half the population under 15. While many countries struggle with declining populations, Niger has the opposite problem—its population is expected to nearly triple by 2050. But this rapid growth comes with huge challenges: limited access to education, healthcare, and jobs, with 750,000 new children born every year. As a landlocked country in the Sahara, Niger is also vulnerable to desertification, losing thousands of acres of farmland each year, making food scarcity a growing issue. So why are birth rates so high? Limited access to contraception, cultural norms favoring large families, and a heavily rural population (82%) all contribute. And Niger isn’t alone—many fast-growing African nations face similar struggles as their populations boom
